Emotions create motion
Leaders want to enable movement - but are often less comfortable with the emotions that come with it.
Change often means moving into the unknown - and the unknown excites, scares, enriches, and pains us. As the word suggests, motion and emotion are intimately linked.
No amount of architecture, process, or planning can animate a human system - emotion is what propels and sustains transformation.
Like sailors harnessing an unpredictable wind, leaders must learn to lean into (and get comfortable with) the often uncomfortable conversations and reactions surrounding change.
Emotions - all emotions - can be helpful. Some will fill the sails with confidence and energy - others warn us we've strayed off course and are headed toward the rocks. The key is to give emotions space to be expressed, shared, and understood.
