What gifts are you withholding from the world?
Early in my coaching journey, I believed my value to others came from knowing the answers to their questions. An earlier business management and consulting career trained me to curate best practices and have my answers ready.
Knowing answers works in a complicated world where problems are hard to solve but addressable with rules, best practices, and available solutions.
In today's complex world, most challenges involve too many unknowns and interrelated factors to reduce to rules and processes - attempting to know the answer is a fool's errand.
Too many people withhold their gift in the flawed belief that they must know the answer before sharing it with the world. Your gift is more often the question you hold rather than any answers you have.
Some of the questions I'm holding (that I have no answers for) are:
- What is my role in helping my sons mature and grow into good men?
- What does it even mean to be a "good man" today?
- How do I shift from a life focused on success to one oriented toward contribution?
The older I get, the fewer answers I have.
