What the most effective leaders do
I could spend the next year coaching leaders and teams on just this list!
Drawn from LCP data of more than 12,000 European leaders, it explores the attributes of the most and least effective leaders in The Leadership Circle database.
It might seem obvious, but leaders are inadvertently shifting into the right-hand column in a big way!
In an effort to empower, create ownership, and reduce hierarchy, leaders are pulling back, going distant, and often sitting on their hands (spoiler alert, this is not leading). The intent is to create room for others - in practice, they cancel out the very attributes that most drive effectiveness.
Leaders who go Distant and Passive give up any ability to Foster Team Play and Mentor (the #1 and #2 defining traits of the most effective leaders). Team Play and Mentoring & Developing are contact sports. You can't hope they emerge - you must be present, engaged, and participatory.
True for your teams, your kids, your partner, and in all relationships.
What patterns do you see in your leadership - or in that of the leaders you support - that might be canceling out the best of who you are?
